Dying man denied medical care in El Paso County jail, lawsuit alleges

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:07:38 GMT

A 48-year-old man died in the El Paso County jail after the facility’s medical staff ignored his deteriorating health and obvious extreme pain for hours, according to a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by the man’s sister Monday.Cristo Canett, 48, died in the jail on April 26, 2022, after he suffered a perforated duodenal ulcer — an ulcer that created a hole in the lining of his small intestine, according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. Such ulcers allow intestinal fluids to leak into a person’s abdominal cavity, which can cause infection, sepsis and death, the complaint states. It’s a treatable condition, but jail medical staff refused to give Canett any help beyond mild painkillers even as he moaned in pain, could not walk and complained about nausea and abdominal pain for hours, the complaint alleges. The lawsuit names as defendants the jail’s medical provider, Wellpath, as well as El Paso County She...

Taco Bell says it wants to "liberate" the phrase "Taco Tuesday," which, believe it or not, has been trademarked by a smaller taco chain for more than 30 years.Taco Bell filed a petition Tuesday -- yes, Taco Tuesday -- with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office seeking an end to the trademark, arguing that "Taco Tuesday" is in common usage and should be available to all."Taco Bell believes 'Taco Tuesday' should belong to all who make, sell, eat and celebrate tacos," the chain said in a statement."Taco Bell seeks no damages or trademark rights in 'Taco Tuesday,'" it said. "It simply seeks common sense for usage of a common term."Trademark lawyers say Taco Bell might have a strong case. There's a carve-out in trademark law that allows for trademarks to be canceled if the trademarked word or phrase enters common usage. In this case, a smaller taco chain called Taco John's trademarked "Taco Tuesday" 34 years ago, meaning no one else can use the phrase for commercial or marketing purposes."T...

IRS will test a free e-filing system next year

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:07:38 GMT

Most taxpayers are interested in filing their taxes directly to the IRS for free, a new report says, and that option will be tested next year. The IRS has spent the past nine months studying whether U.S. taxpayers want to see a free, e-filing system run by the government — and is now preparing to launch a pilot program. The prospect of a free, government-run, online tax filing system has been debated for a long time. Supporters argue that the option would make tax return services more equitable and accessible for taxpayers nationwide. But there's also been pushback from some big tax-prep companies. Now, the IRS plans to launch a pilot program for the 2024 filing season to test a “direct file” system and help the federal government decide whether to move forward with potentially implementing it in the future, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel and the Treasury’s Chief Implementation Officer Laurel Blatchford said Tuesday. There are still few details available about the pilot as the agency det...

Two years ago, I was among the hundreds of people who watched as the historic Pallesen apartment building was trucked from Reed and South First streets to a new location on Fourth and Reed. Applauded as a huge victory for preservation and affordable housing, the move was made possible by key donors and then-Councilmember Raul Peralez’s office, the Preservation Action Council, and Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley. To casual observers, not much has appeared to have happened since with the 1910 Italianate two-story building. But that should be changing very soon. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to allocate $1 million in Measure A funds to Habitat for Humanity to get the ball rolling on bringing the building up to code and making the building’s four units available for purchase by low-income buyers. Kevin Elliott, Habitat for Humanity’s chief real estate officer, said a number of delays pushed back the work — not an uncommon st...
