BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton was placed on the 15-day injured list with right knee inflammation, a move manager Alex Cora says will end his season.“It’s been barking at him,” Cora said Sunday at Fenway Park before a series finale against AL East-leading Baltimore. “We looked at pushing him back. I don’t think it makes sense to push him. He’s been through so much in his career.”Originally, the team pushed back the start of the 34-year-old Paxton to Tuesday against the New York Yankees, but decided it was best to shut him down. Cora said Nick Pivetta will take Paxton’s turn in the rotation the rest of the season.Paxton tore the ulnar collateral ligament in a start with Seattle in April 2021 and had surgery a week later. Paxton had a $6 million deal for the 2022 season while he was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He didn’t pitch that year because of a few setbacks during the recovery process.“It was good,” said Cora, of his season. “The medical staff did an ...Orioles fail to finish off sweep of Red Sox with sloppy 7-3 loss, ending winning streak at 7

Even without the rainy conditions that enveloped Sunday’s series finale between the Orioles and Boston Red Sox, Baltimore has not played its best defense this season at Fenway Park. The trend continued in the Orioles’ final game this year in the iconic ballpark, a sloppy 7-3 loss that ended their seven-game winning streak as the Red Sox dodged a sweep. Five of the runs Baltimore (90-52) allowed were unearned. After going more than a month without making multiple errors, the Orioles have done so in consecutive games, with Sunday marking their third contest with at least three. Four of their 11 games this season with more than one error have been in Boston. In all, they made 10 errors in six games at Fenway Park. The loss, paired with the Tampa Bay Rays’ victory over the Seattle Mariners, reduced Baltimore’s lead in the American League East to three games with 20 contests to play. The Orioles entered the day with their magic number to clinch a playoff spot at fiv...Hurricane Lee will bring dangerous surf, rip currents; forecasters watching

Last week’s sudden burst of warmth and humidity should clear by midweek, at which point forecasters say they will have a better sense of whether a powerful named Atlantic hurricane might make landfall in New England. After days of hot and sticky weather, lingering humidity levels should drop when a weak cold front enters the area bringing lower, more seasonable temperatures, Andy Nash, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told the Herald.“Dew points — the measure of the humidity — will be going down by Wednesday,” Nash said.Rain could continue through Wednesday, with clouds bringing “unsettled weather, showers, and thunderstorms” to the region to start the week, Nash said. Temperatures on Monday should peak in the upper 70s, with calm wind and an overnight low of around 66 degrees.According to the Weather Service, Tuesday morning’s commute could see patches of fog develop before 9 a.m., when rain is possible but less likely. Temperatures will reach into the mid-70...Orioles promoting minor league catcher Samuel Basallo, right-hander Seth Johnson to Double-A Bowie

Entering 2023, Manny Machado was the Orioles’ only hitting prospect over the past 15 years to reach Double-A in his age-19 season or earlier.Jackson Holliday and, now, Samuel Basallo have joined him this season. With the High-A regular season coming to an end Sunday, the Orioles are promoting Basallo, their No. 5 prospect according to Baseball America, and right-hander Seth Johnson, ranked 20th in the system, to Double-A Bowie, a source with direct knowledge of the team’s plans confirmed to The Baltimore Sun.Basallo, who turned 19 last month, is a left-handed-hitting catcher who has been the star of the organization’s dive into the international market, signing for a then-franchise record $1.3 million out of the Dominican Republic in 2021. Ranked baseball’s No. 46 prospect overall, Basallo entered Sunday hitting .305/.397/.543 with 20 home runs, 84 RBIs and 12 steals between Low-A Delmarva and High-A Aberdeen. The rain had been falling for hours, and with the Red Sox leading by a run in the bottom of the sixth it wouldn’t have been a shock if the tarp came out and everyone went home early. But just to be safe, Triston Casas made sure Boston had a bit more breathing room no matter when the game ended. The rookie crushed a three-run home run 402 feet into the Green Monster seats, powering the Red Sox to a 7-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles and averting a three-game sweep. The tarp did eventually come out with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but the game resumed after a 1:28 delay and finally finished at 6:36 p.m., more than five hours after the game’s original start time.Factoring in the 42-minute delay to start the game and the 1:32 rain delay on Saturday, the Red Sox wound up enduring 3:42 worth of stoppages to complete the rain-soaked series.Even with the inclement weather Brayan Bello was sharp. The right-hander limited Baltimore’s offense to three runs over five in...Council President calls for Mass and Cass camp to be cleared ‘immediately’

A group of city councilors have redoubled their efforts to get the city’s health commission to declare a state of emergency in response to the crime and addiction crisis at the Mass and Cass area in the South End.“There are matters within the purview of the Boston Public Health Commission that could help ameliorate the unacceptable conditions in the area of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard, such as declaring the State of Emergency rather than continued delay,” said Council President Ed Flynn along with Councilors Erin Murphy, Frank Baker, and Michael Flaherty in a letter Sunday. The letter appeared hours after Flynn spoke on the airwaves declaring that the tents in the addiction zone need to come down “immediately” while the city acts to address the humanitarian crisis there.“What’s happening at Mass at Cass is violence is continuing, women are exploited, there is major drug dealing, there is someone that was killed recently — that was stabbed and pronounced dead — ther...Latest news
