Patriots new starting QB must depend on cast of disappointing receivers

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:31:37 GMT

FOXBORO — Patriots fans trying to find reasons to care about the 2023 season received some bad news Friday when rookie wide receivers Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte were both ruled out.Douglas, who’s missed practice all week while in concussion protocol for the second time this season, has been one of the lone bright spots for a Patriots offense in shambles. The 2023 sixth-round pick leads the Patriots with 410 receiving yards on 36 catches despite starting just four games. And Boutte, who missed practice Thursday and Friday with a listed shoulder injury and illness, has caught just two passes on seven targets for 19 yards this season but has captivated fans since he was also selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft because of his five-star pedigree as a high school recruit. There was a time during Boutte’s college career when he was considered a potential first-round prospect.Related ArticlesNew England Patriots | Patriots-Chargers injury report: ...

Bridge: Dec. 2, 2023

“Simple Saturday” columns focus on basic technique and logical thinking. The defenders’ approach may vary. They may get busy and try for fast tricks (if declarer has a way of pitching losers), lead trumps to stop him from scoring extra ruffing tricks, or defend passively if it seems he is short of winners. The defense needs a plan of some kind, but some defenders goof by going to Plan B before they try Plan A.Against today’s four spades, West led the king of clubs: four, ten, five. East won the next club with the ace and led a third club, forcing South to ruff. But South drew trumps, lost a diamond to the ace and took the rest, making game.FORCING GAMEA “forcing game” (making declarer ruff so many times that he loses control of the trump suit) is often a viable defense, but it was Plan B in this deal. East missed Plan A.East should overtake the king of clubs, cash his ace of diamonds and lead a second club. When West wins, he can give East a diamon...
